HOLIDAY RECYCLED DIY PROJECT

blog21

As some of you are able to pick up… i am a bargin shopper, deal finder, treasure hunter, all things renewed kinda girl. A couple of you suggested that i try a DIY post just for fun. I do not take any of this seriously.. its just a fun outlet. I am by no means an interior decorator.. and I dont try to be. But I do have a lot of fun, (as a new wife and homemaker) exerimenting with projects and decor. Here is a little fun table or shelf decor piece made completely out of recycled goods around the house. No money was spent.. no supplies were bought its just a funky, urban, fall do-dad to add to a naked spot in the house. haha.

When it comes to holiday decorations i really dont like the cheesy UBER christmas looking decor. Mostly because you can only use it for the month of december. haha. I really enjoy a hint of holiday and christmas. I enjoy a very subtle change in decor. Here is a little something I came up with that meets those requirements for myself. Haha

All you need to get started is pictured above:  twigs from outside, newspaper, feathers, old shish kabob skewers, paint brush, black paint,  a used wine bottle (from the neighbors trash can of course, haha), a little peice of ribbon from used gift wrap, and glue.

You start by rolling the paper into a small tube. Wind the paper around into a circle, to create a rose bud look. Add crinkled paper to the back of the “rose bud” and secure it with glue or tape.

Paint the shish kabob skewers black or the color you want the stem of the flower to be.

once everything is dry… stab the painted skewer through the paper and secure it with glue

Add feathers, and secure with glue.

Then place all the items in the wine bottle. I added a little slice of ribbon, as the leaves, to one of the flowers created. You could also decorate the bottle with robbon, paint, paper etc. For this one i painted vertical white stipes.

OKAY thats it. Now you just put it with some little decorative pumpkins and you are GOLDEN. Thoughts?

Good job, Promise! I love the play on textures in the actual flowers themselves. From the rigid black and white of the newsprint, to the soft layers of the feathers I think it’s great. I think it’s also a great use of prints. The dots on the feathers, newsprint and the black and white stripes on the bottles reminds me of how you dress — play on shape, textures, & patterns. All around rockin’.

I recently found that my local craft store Michaels has some great craft projects posted on their website. They also have a free holiday booklet that gives you inexpensive gift ideas that you can create (with instructions on their website) as well as offering class to demonstrate some of their holiday craft projects. I plan to attend their bookmark project demo. I’ll give these as gifts along with some homemade biscotti, good coffee, and a mug.
