GOOD NEW READ + AN OLD HAIRDO

I just finished the book: Nice Girls Don’t Get The Corner Office by Lois P. Frankel. The book focused on the word “girl” not so much the word “nice”. In other words it’s not mean’t to say that nice people don’t get anywhere in life. And I don’t believe that. But it has some really great tips on how to act, think, sound, respond, and lead as a strong woman instead of acting like a sweet *little* girl that we were brought up to be. Some of content is geared towards an older generation. I think that our younger generation definitely feels more empowered than our mothers in some ways. But I still got a lot out of the book. Have you read it before? If so, what did you think? I know there is some contrasting thoughts about that book.

I believe that some women in the workplace are KILLING it. Making it a better working environment on all levels. I enjoyed reading this article on how women are surpassing men in the workplace in certain areas. All around I recommend the book if you are a woman looking to stand a little taller, believe in yourself a bit more, and stretch your leadership potential.

On another note, I found the photo below when I was cleaning out my computer folders. I like to keep my files organized so I can find things easily. But when I have a screen share Skype session I clean up real quick sweeping everything under the rug in a folder titled “stuff”. Overtime I accidentally accumulate stuff1, stuff2, and stuff3 folders. Haha. But anyway. I enjoyed seeing this photo, going back to memory lane, and thinking WHAT WAS I THINKING WITH THAT BLONDE HAIR?!?! I’m definitely a brunette kinda girl. Here is the blog post from 2009. Reminded me that I’ve been posting since 2008! Crazy!

And one more thing…On Monday I am releasing the new Fall 2012 website designs for Sitehouse. AHH!!! And we are getting closer and closer to the October Workshop. I am so in love with the girls already! We got them in a Facebook group already getting to know each other, chatting, and some are EVEN TEXTING!! What?!?! That’s crazy! Looking forward to getting to know them more through the branding & style homework and finally meeting them in October! AHH!!! Ready to rock!

Sarah - I honestly loved the blonde, but I totally understand how you feel when you go back to old photos! I barely recognize myself when I had bleached blonde hair! I love the brunette too…it gives you more color!!!

promisetangeman - thanks Sarah, :) You are kind. ps. i like the wedding on your blog right now. Cute couple. :)

rachel - I am looking forward to getting that book on my kindle. Lately I have been reading a lot about how to improve body language, posture and tone of voice as well as word choice to come across as a more professional woman in an authoritative way rather than being perceived as a responsible & organized secretary strait off AMC’s Mad Men.

I recently applied to a lot of adjunct faculty & assistant professor positions and kept getting the same response “you’re so sweet” “you’re too feminine” “your designs are too stylized for a female audience” “you don’t seem like you can take charge of a difficult situation”

Thanks for the book review!

Jenika - I just checked that book out from the library! :-) Will be interested to read it, hoping it will be substantive and not just stereotype warmed over.

And girl, you’ve got STYLE. I LOVE it.

xo

Annie - Haha! :) “Horse wig” made me smile! I remember that post – I saw it on Sarah’s blog and that’s how I found you! Been reading ever since! I love your thrifty style and definitely your hair. Can’t wait to meet you! xo

Lydia - I always thought you looked great as a blonde, but I must say that the brunette color is amazing on you! It tempts me to possibly play around with my own hair a little bit more!

augusta - I so remember that post! And I absolutely love you as a blonde. Love to see you growing and continuing to develop your own style though. :)

Scarlett & Stephen - Ha ha, I’m honestly still getting used to the brunette because I first met you as a blonde and totally think you pull it off just as much. But, yes, I too once used to be bleached blonde until I finally realized, God made me brunette for a reason. p.s. I just bought my first Suave Dry Shampoo yesterday. Looking forward to trying it out per your suggestion! :-)

Bethany Barkey - Hey! I bet you would also get a kick out “Nice Girls Don’t Change the World” by Lynne Hybels! It’s super short, quick read so if I ever need a pep talk a glance through it!! Well use too…I gave away the two copies I had and need to get another! Hah!

Jana - I read the majority of this book the same day I bought it. It has many excellent tips on how to cut out drama and stay professional. The only thing I did not like about the book is throughout the entire thing any type of feminimity is equated to decreasing your credibility. Long hair, painted nails, even tilting your head while listening to someone speak. Basically, it tells you the less feminine you are, the more credible you become.
I’m a woman, I have long hair and breasts and I don’t feel the need to cover them up or hide anything. Perhaps that is the nature of the beast. Perhaps that is just the nature of the beast but I feel the only thing that should effect credibility is performance, not appearance. What a lovely world that would be.
Since reading I have also ordered Hardball For Women which is also somewhat dated but still full of great insight.

05 INSIDE THE CREATIVE TOOLBOX

It’s that time again! Liz Grant here. Welcome to another installment of the Creative Toolbox. Today we are taking a look inside the toolbox of Makeup Artist Liv Lundelius. Before most young girls apply their first coat of mascara, Liv knew she was destined for a career in makeup and fashion. “As a kid I would be asked for advice by my mum and her friends on how to dress or do their make up”, she recalls. She has since worked a number of events worldwide such as NYC, Berlin and London Fashion Weeks. Liv Lundelius’ portfolio of makeup creations highlights some of the reasons she recently won the Jemma Kidd Make Up Artistry Competition. She is one talented lady! Here is Liv with her favorite tools of her trade.

1 // HIGH QUALITY BRUSHES: To do professional makeup, you need professional tools. My brushes are like a treasure; I look after them very well. The best quality of brushes I have found are made by Shu Uemura. I am constantly expanding my collection and excited about every new addition. Treating myself to good tools is a great motivation.

2 // FACE CHARTS: To visualize makeup ideas and to discuss and plan looks, I like to work with hand colored face charts. I always have a few printed so I can scribble ideas down. The charts are also handy when I am working with brides, as I can take notes of the exact products we have used in a trial to be used on their wedding day.

Tiffany Farley - Ooh love! Will be google-ing some of this! :)

promisetangeman - Tiffany- I KNOW!! I am totally looking into that skincare company. NEED THAT!! i love these tips. Thanks Liv

Sonal - I have a question for Liz–how do you care for your makeup brushes?

Liz - Sonal, let me see if Liv could answer that question for you.

Liv - @Sonal:
Thank you for your question.
A very good and quick way is to use a professional brush cleaner, Shu Uemura does a good one, that I use to sanitize brushes quickly on photoshoots. You pour a little of the liquid on a tissue and gently swirl the brush around.

At home and after a photo shoot, I wash my brushes.
For natural bristles brushes I use a mild shampoo, for the synthetic fiber brushes a little fairy liquid does the trick.
Rinse them well and form them back into their original shape while damp.
Let them air dry over the corner of a table(any flat surface)!
I hope that helps.

Ariana GOVEA - Great post…

Ariana Govea - Love this info…can’t wait to check these brushes out!

Mailinh - Sending you lots of happy vibes & energy to keep you going! I’m sorta in the same boat: need to tweak three syllabi for three different classes (I start a new semester Monday), prep for the first day of classes, get ready for a photo shoot Sunday morning, and sending out a lot of e-mails to colleagues.

P.S. I love your new table! It’s so fun! The color of your chalkboard wall and table reminds me of your colors of your blog header and site. ;)

Jarka H. - I would choose different color but it still looks great. Love the minimalistic design.

Patricia - That is SO YOU Promise. I love it!

rin handika - waaaw cool blog :D i love it! and i love your table, yellow :) Cute!

krystal/village - I’m really enjoying your blog…this table is right up my alley!

MEANINGFUL, PRACTICAL, OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE, AND DISTURBING

I wanted to share with you a bit of my past weekend. So I thought I would share it in a meaningful, practical, out of my comfort zone, and disturbing kind of way. Maybe you can relate.

MEANINGFUL: I have really been enjoying spending time with family and friends in this season. It has a new meaning for me lately! This past weekend we took a very short trip to Denver Colorado for my husband’s cousin’s wedding. It was a beautiful small intimate wedding in the botanical gardens. It felt really good to be with our family. We ate well and danced till we dropped.

PRACTICAL: One of my fun staples on this trip was my Foxy earrings from Madewell. A gift from my lovely Friend Liz Grant. Usually I wear no earrings or really noticeable show-stopper kind of earrings. But these add a simple detail. They are understated and unique. Madewell has some other really cute simple earrings right now. Cute gift ideas huh? Liz knows what’s up.

OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE: Meet Nicole, Karina, Tori, Veronica, Shelly, Heather, and Shannon. On my way to the airport we had an impromptu meet up with a group Denver girls. It was definitely short and sweet but it was fun to meet face to face, hear about their different creative businesses, and get their take on balancing family life with careers. And they all had great hair to top it off. I’m an introvert in a lot of ways. I can get all tongue-tied, hot, and nervous with new unexpected situations. and of course that DID in fact happen! BUT THESE GIRLS WERE SOOOO RAD! I never get over the fact that the Internet can connect like minded people that live miles and miles apart. And for that, I am very thankful. I need more of this in my life! A big thank you to this special group of girls. Thanks for making the time to connect. In person. I hope and pray for continued success in your businesses and that you grow in your deep love and passion for the REAL things that matter in life.

DISTURBING: My husband and I are OBSESSED with the show Breaking Bad. AHH! Is that disturbing?

Trevor Dayley - My wife and I are huge fans of Breaking Bad as well. Great show!

promisetangeman - so addicting!! :)

Vanessa Hurtado - Love this, very inspiring! Don’t know whats out there for us if we don’t take that step out of our comfort zones :) Thank you for sharing Promise!

Shaina Longstreet - I think those earrings are adorable. :) Thanks for sharing

Jaclyn C. - Haha…I can totally relate to getting hot and nervous when meeting up with new people. I also sweat. tmi? hehe!

Heather Gray - You’re the sweetest Promise. Thank you for the mention. I can’t believe that meet us was “out of your comfort zone,” we never would have known. It’s refreshing to hear stories like that, it makes everyone so real, ya know? Thank you again for inviting us to meet you in person. I hope to see you again soon! You rock!

melissa stover - i, too, became obsessed with breaking bad about 3 months ago. i watched all the old seasons on netflix and started feeling so close to the characters i was tempted to put saul’s number on my fridge (in case of emergency). greatest show ever next to mad men.

Kelli Murray - Breaking Bad is “our” show too. We almost went into depression when we realized Netflix only went to the second season. BUT THEY JUST CAME OUT WITH THE THIRD!! haha. So happy we are getting back into it again. I think it’s honestly my fave show ever. And no, I’m not the most proud of that. haha. love you.

Kelsee - Breaking Bad…oh Breaking Bad. Everytime I watch it i tell myself I shouldn’t watch it. Its that terrible car wreck I can’t seem to look away from while driving down the highway!! I love it so much!!!! I think the same goes for Dexter and Weeds also.

Mariana Herrera Mosli - We’re on season 5 now…and just heard about the series a week or so ago, so you can imagine the sleepless nights getting caught up, lol! We are definitely sharing the OBSESSION!! :)

IPAD CASE: ON THE LOOK OUT

I am on the lookout right now for a fun iPad case. I did a few minutes of perusing the webs and came across a few favorites. I just recently got an iPad for referencing website designs that I create. But that’s kind of all I use it for right now. I have not started using it on a daily basis yet. I really thought I would. So I am thinking that a case for it might help. haha. Good reasoning, right? Haha. Do you have an IPad? And If so, what do you mainly use it for? And what-the-heck Apps do I need to get?!? Also… link in some rad IPad cases in the comment section if you know of any. On the look out!

I love THESE TWO from Madewell. Thinking this is probably the one I will get! The striped are fun, but the bright yellow is CRAZY! Although it might get a bit dirty?!?!

I was really impressed by the look of the quality of THIS ONE! This would be a good choice because my husband uses the iPad as well. And I think this one would last a while. The pockets are a plus. And I love their website too!

THIS ONE is more of a fascination than anything. Really REALLY rad cases. I couldn’t really understand what was going on exactly. This stop motion video does not disappoint. I think it’s really beneficial when companies use video to showcase their product. DONE! Hope you are having a good Wednesday!

L. - You should definitely check out BookBook cases for the iPad. Its a case that looks like an old book & keeps the iPad secure. I use one for mine & absolutely love it.

L.

Shauna - Nubbytwiglet.com - I love Dodo cases. They’re handmade in SF and resemble hardcover books!

http://www.dodocase.com/

For apps, Flipboard is really cool for managing all your social media streams in one place:

http://flipboard.com/

Linnea - I got an iPad earlier in the summer so I could show slideshows of my work during client meetings (I’m a wedding photographer). I have also found a daily purpose for it – I stopped using my paper calendar and now use the Calendar app! I agonized over finding the perfect case and finally knew I’d found the one when I saw these Quincy cases by Jess LC: http://www.jesslc.com/collections/small-leather-goods

I love that it is a folio rather than a pocket. I also love the little pockets on the inside cover that I can slot my business cards in… and it zips up!

In terms of must-have apps… I’ve been using these: Kindle (for books & pdfs), Perfect RSS (for blogs!), Flipboard (turns your social media sources into a magazine-style flip book), and Evernote (for all my to-dos & notes).

Hope you’re having the best week!

promisetangeman - Awesome thanks Shauna!! I will check those out!

promisetangeman - Linnea- I will check out the Calandar app. I definitely need to be more on top of that! thanks! and I have heard about flip board… thinking that will change my life. :)

Allison - I bought that top striped one from Baggu for a friend and she loved it! Love the other finds!

Laura - An awesome app is “Paper” for sketching. I LOVE it, it is so much like sketching in a sketchbook, except makes such nice lines! So great for blocking out layout ideas or just outlining drawings/logos. Its the most intuitive app I’ve found, with easy adding and “flipping” pages.

The Adobe Ideas app is pretty good for quick drawing too, but its more like illustrator with your fingers, and Inkpad is even MORE like illustrator with your fingers, but more advanced. You could legit create a vector logo in it. And from inkpad you can save your arwork as SVG or EPS files, and email them…I’ve often started someting on the ipad, emailed it to myself, and then finished it in illustrator.

(summary: Paper, Inkpad, Adobe Ideas)

Mailinh - I don’t have an iPad, but I wanted to concur with Shauna about Flipboard. I have it on my iPhone & love it. My friends who have all things Apple love the app Evernote. Hmmmm….iPad cases…

Lauren - I did use my iPad much until I got one with 3G on it (which I don’t even use all the time-so it doesn’t make sense).

But now I read all my blogs on it with Reeder (love the intuity of this app)
Read books with iBook and Kindle
Amazon for shopping
Chrome is great to use as well instead of Safari, it’s also nice because if you have a google account you can sync passwords, tabs, bookmarks from it to Chrome on a desktop
Catalogs – if you like catalogs you get in the mail – here’s an all digital copy of nearly everything out there
Evernote – if you use it on your phone/desktop
Remote – now you need an Apple TV – especially if you watch videos or digital movies on a television

The other thing I couldn’t live without is my Skinit (another brand is Gelaskin) so my iPad is branded!

Have fun!

Kirsten - Oooh all of these are so cute! I love the first one, the blue stripey one! ADORBES! I got an ipad case a few months ago when Missoni had all of the Target stuff and I bought this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Missoni-Leather-Case-iPad%C2%AE-ASD364/dp/B00512DINI/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1345077633&sr=8-3&keywords=target+missoni+ipad+case

I love it so much! The colors are more vibrant in person and I love the brown leather – it feels really good and fits perfectly. I love stripes of any kind and I love these zigzags with the blue and coral with the one bright yellow stripe (and like I said, it is more bright in person) Can’t wait to see which adorable case you get! There is so many cute ones!

Jarka H. - Wow, they´re awesome!

Alison - I want an iPad SOOO bad…I would use it for my portfolio. So easy to show to clients! If someone asks to see my work, just pull out the iPad!

Hannah - Pinterest just came out with their iPad app this week! That will be taking up most of my time… Flipboard is also awesome!

Jordan - My recommendations for iPad cases & accessories: http://milknsugar.com/category/ipad-2/

Also, a few of the iPhase cases also have iPad versions:
http://milknsugar.com/?s=iphone+case

My recommendations for apps: http://www.goldswag.com/

Love the blog Promise, keep up the solid posts!

Patricia - flipboard is a must have ap

Stephanie - They aren’t incredibly convenient when it comes to opening and closing, but I LOVE the aged leather on these cases :)

http://coolmaterial.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/julie_boyle_leather_iPad_case.jpg

Bethany - I have a portenzo case (http://shop.portenzo.com) and LOVE it. I especially love that it looks like a sketchbook and got a couple of great styluses (http://www.ifaraday.com/store.html) and (http://www.more-real.com/)

liana - there are a few portfolio apps we use to present our work, it helps when meeting with potential client and showing them the work we have done. it has options to link to the web page and have images of the logo, stationary etc. I forgot the name of the one we use at our office but once i have the iPad in front of me i can check and let you know.

Chelsea - Those are all so cute! Hard to choose!

Kelli Forsythe - Hi all! I own a bag-bz and am wanting to add an ipad case to the collection. We have an ipad satchel–the case would be utilizing the same materials–bright fabrics covered in repurposed industrial netting! With wear, it takes on the look of suede! http://www.thesoulbag.com/satchel.html

I’d love any more design feedback and suggestions for a case for the ipad! (Hopefully I’ll be making some new website changes soon thanks to you Promise!) The above info gives me a good idea of what’s out there.

sabrina - ive always wanted an ipad case… but can never fine a good one.. any thoughts

HAIRSTYLE VIDEO TUTORIAL

Another hair tutorial for you! I actually shot this video the same time as THIS ONE. and just recently remembered that I had not posted it. FUN! I have a bit shorter hair now, but the process still applies. In this video I show you the process I go through from wet hair to done hair! Then I leave it for a few days! So I spend about 30 minutes “styling” my hair then let it go for 3 or 4 days. It gets a little grungier everyday and that’s a look that I like. Also find out some of my favorite products and styling techniques! Sorry ahead of time for the weird mirror faces & funny quirks! Haha! HAVE FUN! If you guys try this I WANNA SEE! Post up in the comments. Happy Monday!

Mailinh - Woohoo!!! Another fun tutorial to try! :) Happy Monday!

promisetangeman - GREAT!! have fun! :)

kristen - This is awesome! Will try, although pretty skeptical about how well it will work on fine hair that does not hold a curl!

Sarah - What I can’t figure out is how your hair has maintained it’s body and fullness even when you were a blonde?! I LOVE how big your hair is! Thanks for the video =)

Keira - Okay Promise, I have the OPPOSITE hair! It’s super fine, thin, short, blonde…seriously. Opposite. BUT I’m going to try your handy-dandy tricks to see if I can texture it up/give it some oomph! I’m not sure how to post an after picture here…maybe it will show up on Instagram :) Thanks for the tips!!

promisetangeman - Sarah- My hair was REALLY big… way bigger when it was blonde because the bleach made it damaged and HUGE!! Do you bleach your blonde hair at all?

Jaclyn C. - Ahh!!! I was literally just thinking yesterday, “How does she get so much volume? She must have thick hair to begin with.” And you do!! Thanks for the tips. I love it. I have been promifying my hair the past few weeks and LOVE it. :) I will send you some pix. Should I on facebook? I think that might be the best. Oh…and you rock!

Yasmin Sarai - hahaha I like the disclaimer… “AH!!! You DID your hair today! WOW!” haha Thanks for posting!

Kat - I’ve been using the bed head serum for about a year now RELIGIOUSLY and love it but I never considered using it on wet hair…. it was always my “finishing touch”. haha. I think I will start though because tangles in long wet hair are such a pain! thanks for sharing! I love your messy style!

promisetangeman - Kat- Yes! This works really really well in wet hair and makes it WAY easier to comb through the tangles. Works like a charm

Anna - I never realized how much volume you have naturally! i would have to tease every single strand to get that! but THANK YOU for sharing…you look fab as always!

Marissa - Ok Promise I’m going to get that bed head product and give it a try! I’ve got the thick hair, but I also have curly hair so I’m not so sure my air dried hair will be manageable!!! what I would give to just have slight wave in my hair!!!!

Kathleen - Can I give an “AMEN!” for your attitude towards your hair? Love it.

Annie - Oh my word! Your hair looks KILLA at every point in this video – styled and unstyled! :) I’m tempted to bleach my hair to make it go coarse so I can style it like this, but I don’t know how I would look as a blonde…

Vanessa - Loved this tutorial! I watched your messy bun tutorial a few weeks ago and LOVED it. I have a feeling I’ll love this hair style too! Can’t wait to meet in September! xo

Danielle - amazing hair tutorial definitely trying this you should make more hair tutorials!!!

ira lee henson - thank you so much for this video! i always love seeing what you use and how you style your hair. my hair is very similar so this gives me lots of great ideas!!!

Sarah - Promise – I did bleach my hair. I LOVED the way my hair did any and everything during that time, so I guess it makes sense! I just wish I had your length! It did really well for the first year or so and then the damage kicked in. (major breakage=no growth) Now I have an ombre thing going on (thank you fashion gods for letting regrowth be in style ha!) and I only have about an inch left of bleach. All natural color for now! Thanks!

stacy k - LOVE your hair, Promise … thanks for the tips! I’ll have to try ratting mine after it’s curled. You rock!

Lupe Ruiz - AHHH!! Thank you for the awesome post!! My hair is just like yours – thick, course and has a natural curl/wave, and I’ve always shied away from just letting it do it’s thing because I hated the dry ends and course texture. I also prefer to let it air dry, there’s no way I’m blow drying my hair (unless I want a full on ‘fro!) I love how you work with what you’ve got and do amazing things with your hair! I can’t wait to try this on my own hair!

melissa stover - fabulous hair! wish i had that much.

Sonya - I love your videos, Promise!! Thank you for the great tips! Can you tell me what size curling iron are you using? 1″ or 1 1/4″
Thank you for the inspiration and for sharing your beautiful light.
xoxo

amy - wow. all i have to say is wow. my hair is the complete opposite!! i have super fine asian hair, flat, no volume whatsoever, super straight, and really thin. basically, super boring! i have tried numerous thickening/texturizing products… none ever really work… so don’t mind me if i’m constantly coming back to this video to admire all the awesomeness that is your hair….!

REMEMBER TO BE THANKFUL

“Cultivating a spirit of thankfulness will turn your life perspective upside down.” Lindsay is back this week illustrating a quote found from THIS blog post talking about comparing yourself to others. It’s a great reminder… one that you have to consciously be aware of and consistently reminding yourself. For other illustrated quotes: here and here. Have a great Friday.
