Q&A FOR CREATIVE MINDS!!

img_6923editblog
img_5540editblog

OKAY sound off!! This is the blog post where you can ask any question you want about art, design, life, ideas, gear, programs, software, photography, business, AND SOMEONE WILL ANSWER IT!! haha. Someone will answer… whether its me or another artist blogger. There are a lot of really talented people around this community so there will be a lot of great answers. I am so stoked to read and see the conversation that is going to take place here. Please answer people’s questions as well. Ask something that you have been wanting to ask for a while OR ask something silly and stupid like: ” What was the name of your first pet?”. hahaha. okay okay.

Here are some questions to get started answering: what are your favorite photo editing programs? photo previewing program? Do I need to make and print brochures for people to hand out to promote my business? I want to paint, but where do i start? How do i present a design to a client? What do you do for a living? How do I get over a creative block? THRIFT STORE SHOPPING?

samantha felgemaker - hey missus. this is random- of topic, if you will.. potential names for children?! :) and not even ones that you’ve discussed with brian.. like, ones you wanted and saved as a child.. for potential animals and stuffed pets and such. so basically, favourite names? :)

pax/xo
-samantha.

promisetangeman - hahaha. thats funny. I have always liked the name finnegan. and we have some friends that named their baby girl GENISIS. i think that is beautiful. i like the name Fox for a boy. hmmm.. i’ll let you know if i think of more.

promisetangeman - OH.. when i was little o LOVED the name Brice for a boy.

ashley bugg - ooh! i also love the name Fox for a boy!! but currently in our “back-up-just-in-case-file” we have Scarlett for a girl and Lenox for a boy…not that anyone asked ME, per say…but I do love discussing names :) seriously, good names just make me want to have more kids just so that I can name them!! Also as a close second for a girl is Arden (which I REALLY love)…but arden bugg isn’t so good…I mean really. g-arden bugg? we’re just askin’ for it.

as for q’s from me………um…how do you package your LARGE prints? I’m always lookin’ for fancy, fresh ways to package the big prints (like 11×14 and larger…what about something like 24×36?!?!?)

I’ll chime in as I think of other q’s..fun post, Prom!

ashley bugg - oh. and I LOVE LOVE LOVE that pic of Nate! I saw it on his blog a few days ago :) ahhh…i miss him.

Andrea - Hey Promise,

I want to invest in a REAL camera. What would you recommend for a photography hobby? (I’ve heard great things about the Canon Rebel and that is what I’m leaning towards)

On a completely different note, did I see “DJ Tanner” in your wedding pictures slide show?! :)

promisetangeman - ASHLEY!! i love Lenox. sooo cute. and for packaging.. i would do a tube poster mailer!?! i am sure they will have some more creative ideas. haah i have always just used mailer tubes.

Andrea!! For photography hobby, keep with Canon. If you really fall in love you want to use Canon. I had to make the switch from Nikon to Canon. Rebel sounds good. Or Canon 50d. Those are both great starts. and YES that was Candace Cameron (D.J. Tanner from Full house). HOW did you recognize her? I wouldnt have.

Debbie - How do you make your hair look so frigging sweet? Seriously, step-by-step instructions would be much appreciated, products included!

samantha felgemaker - ashley- no way go for arden! my cousin’s name is arden, it’s precious. but true about the G/arden thing :/ but scarlett makes me think of ‘ohare’ and fall in love all over again.

promise- i love your names! ive been a fan of phineas and finnegan. i remember seeing something about you saying genesis as a name.. its gorgeousssss.

samantha felgemaker - oh man, thought of another.. this is for ms. promise and ms. ashley; when’s your guys’ big plan/plot dropping? im anxiously waiting. :)

amylynne - alllright I have a question..
my friend asked me to do a photoshoot for her? she is apparently under the impression that because i have an dslr that i can conquer anything. truth is i know nothing about photoshoots but i want her to think i do. HAHA.

so my question is–can i have some tips on how to pull this off looking like its not a big deal and i do it all the time? or can i have some tips on how to do this at all? hahaha.

thanks!!

Bryce Driesenga - Hey there… I am just starting out trying to get started with design & photography as a career. Any tips on how you marketed yourself and how you got jobs starting out? I am not making much money currently, but have done some design & photography, mainly for local bands and I still am doing that. I never know about how much to charge for anything or how I can make more money to afford better equipment, though, I don’t think I have the worst stuff.

Also, if you get a chance, I’d love for you to check out my Flickr page and just maybe give me a 1-10 rating for all of my stuff… or maybe mention a few photos/designs you liked the most.

I don’t mind if you answer all or one of these questions, any feedback is great! Thanks!

Katie - My quesiton: I’m always interested in learning how other people interact with their clients during photo shoots. Your style of coaching & posing— the things you say, the questions you ask, the feedback you give, the conversations you have, etc.

And another one! What kind of music inspires you? (Do you have any favorite bands or artists you listen to when you’re in the creative ZONE!?)

One more! I too would love to know how you do your hair! It’s hot.

promisetangeman - SAMANTHA FLEGE: we dont know the exact date yet… but hopefully in the next few weeks. should be FUN!! haha

AMYLYNNE: haha thats funny. that will be a fun time. has she see any photos that you have taken before? she obviously trusts you and wants you to do it for a reason. Go browse the fashion magazine aisle at the store. That will give you some great inspiration. and Go slow in the photoshoot.. you dont have to be clicking THE WHOLE the time to do a good job. its okay to stop and breath for a sec. haha

Sheila Lory - This is cool, I have tons of questions but I will keep it to a few.

For Photography:

1. What gear do you use, camera, lenses, shooting bag, accessories, storage system, software, etc.?
2. What is you workflow process?
3. How did you start out?
3. Do you use any actions?
4. If you could go back and do things differently, what would you do?
5. How did you meet David Jay and Sarah Rhoads? Networking, are you good at it, any advice?
6. ANy website you can recommend, for inspiration, beginners..

LOL, I have so many questions.

Love your work!

David Womack - Great blog!

Promise: I have been wanting to ask you for a while… What kind of technique do you use for photo transfer to canvas or wood or anything like that? I want to incorporate some of my photography onto larger traditional works

Andrea: I am a wanna be photographer. My wife and I take a ridiculous amount of photos so we decided to just into a decent camera also. I think the Canon 50d is great BUT… after reading a lot of the reviews they would say the 40d and 50d were so similar that the upgrade wasn’t worth it. SO we bought a 40d off craigslist for a GREAT price. WE LOVE IT! here’s a couple we’ve taken with it (http://www.flickr.com/photos/wordonwomack/)

amylynne: Also I want to look pro even though I don’t do it for money so I have recently rented a couple lens and they make ALL the difference and renting off the internet is completely affordable. AND the 50mm 1.8 is a MUST have cheapy lens that takes amazing pics ($100 or so)

Rock On!

Troy Grover - For PHOTOGRAPHERS!

I saw a thing about what photo previewing program to use. If you think it takes awhile to pick out the pictures you want because of all the rendering preview in LR. Get PHOTO MECHANIC it will seriously change your life.

It is so fast and that is the main purpose of the program. You can try it out for free for 20 days at : http://www.camerabits.com

Anyways, hope that helps. Promise I’m going to get you hooked on it when you come out in a couple of weeks :)

kellyhicks - Hi Promise, you inspired me to start my own design blog and I was wondering if you had any advice on blogging in general or specifically for designers? It’s hard to know what people will be interested in.

Nicole Gelinas - So as much as I love my Rebel XTi digital SLR camera, it is too large to pack around with me all of the time. I always find myself wishing I had a pocket size camera with just as many manual features so that I can easily capture whatever where ever I happen to be. I was just wondering if anyone had any smaller digital cameras that they really like and can recommend. I know Canon has some pretty nice ones, but I have also been hearing about one called the Lumix by Panasonic. Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Tim Allen - OK… this is funny.

Promise: I was just thinking about emailing you because I had a question I wanted to ask about design stuff, but I thought I’d just check your blog to see what you were up to! So… I s’pose I’ll ask here and let anyone respond, but I’d really like to know YOUR thoughts!

I might be going to a trade show in Sept. and I’m wanting to create some sort of print collateral for people to take away who are interested in HIGH END video production; HD, 35mm, Major Motion Graphic – that sort of thing.

I was looking at doing like a postcard type deal with some info, but that just didn’t say “high end” enough to me. What kind of print format do you think would be cool for somebody like me trying to promote film/video??

You da’bomb!

promisetangeman - KATIE!!! Before I start the photoshoot I talk to my clients. I get to know them. I try to have them ride with me to the location.. or maybe we grab coffee. I found that their response to my direction during the shoot COMPLETELY changes when I KNOW them. haha. They feel more relaxed and comfortable with me. And they learn to trust my direction when i ask them to do something. making friends with your clients is NUMBER ONE!!!

and for music.. I love MOLLY JENSON (fun photoshoot and video coming with her) Mute Math. Katy Perry (haha..) Cold play. I am the type of girl that listens to an album until she cant listen to it ANYMORE. haha. I love the Weepies

promisetangeman - BRYCE!! i love that name by the way. A great way to start.. is to document the projects that you have. Show them off on a blog or website. Flickr is great. You have some great stuff going on there. Its great to do a few free photoshoots and design projects then throw them up on your online presence. It lets people know that you are active and alive in your work. Hand pick your friends and approach them about doing some projects. Word of mouth and an online presence online is the BEST way to market yourself. In my opinion, dont waste your money buying ad space in magazine or doing a lot of print marketing. hope this helps. AND this is just my opinion. anyone else on this topic?

Bryce Driesenga - Hey, thanks a lot Promise. I have been meaning to get started on a website soon. I’ll have to look into hosting, etc., ha.

amy - I thought that was Nathan! Oh he is so funny!!!

promisetangeman - KELLY!!! YAY! i love it that you started a design blog. It looks great. Don’t worry about what other poeple are interested in at first. Just start blogging whatever you want. Whatever you treasure in your life.. or whatever you want to share with people. The more blog posts you write, the more YOUR own style will unfold. Think of your blog as a project journal, a piece of yourself, a scrap book, your own resource website. all your favorite things you need. Make your blog your inspiration center.

samantha felgemaker - nicole- my parents each have a different lumix by panasonic and absolutely adore them.. they take phenomenal photos of my siblings.. im thinking of getting one for myself :)

Nicole Monique Photography - I also want to know how to do your rockin hairstyles, Promise! I am wondering what camera body you use and which lens is your favorite? I am constantly blown away by your style! Do you make clothes or do you mostly buy clothing then alter it to your liking? Thanks for being so open to a million random questions!

promisetangeman - Sheila Lory!!! here are my answers. sorry so long.

1. I still use just some basic gear. I use a canon 5d mark2, 24-70mm F/2.8 L series lens, Canon Speedlite 580EX II Flash, just a basic camera and laptop bag from frys electronics. Macbook Pro laptop 15 inch. the software i use is photoshop and a few actions from totally rad actions, and adobe bridge.

2. My work flow is simple. Shoot the session, download to laptop, select photos to edit, save them into a new file, edit the photos, save the edited photos into a new file, resize images for web and my blog and add watermark. send off the final images to clients. i hope this is what you were talking about. I am sure there are better ways to do this. hah. But that is my work flow as of now.

3. I started taking photos in college. I took a photo class. A friend of mine asked if i could take her senior photos. ahhhaah. and i did. People liked them for some reason. All through college i took photos on the side. It was fun.

4. I do use actions… but I mix and match them.. so they dont look like eveyone else’s photos. I use photoshop color editing mostly. But thats because I am used to the program because I use it for design. A lot of photographers use lightroom. i heard its a great program.

5. If I could go back in time i would not compare myself to others, i would be consistant with putting myself out there to book photoshoots.

6. I met other photographers online actually. haha. commented on their blogs, sent “HI” emails, and just being confident in my work. and I am excited about what they do. When you are excited… to want to connect with others that are doing the same thing. Don’t be intimidated. They are just people too.

7. There are soooo many photographers blogs that i LOVE. They are all over the place. a few of my favorites are: Jasmine star, sarah rhoads, Jeremy cowart, daley hake. love them all.

promisetangeman - NICOLE MONIQUE!! I answered the camera and gear question in the comment above. I am really cheap and super thrifty in my style. hahaha. My favorite places to shop are:
savers, goodwill, value village
urban outfitters (only on the sale rack)
target, ross, tj maxx
forever 21

the clothes i get from thrift stores i usually alter and change. OR really old clothes that i want to throw out. I usually try to look at them in a differnt way and change it a little so i will like it again. haha. its weird i know. hope this helps

promisetangeman - TIM!!!! i think Nathan should chime in on this one. Instead of a printed design can you give them a little media something? I wonder if it is super expensive to get flash drives printed with your website on them. and then have your media work on the flashdrive? hmm… or cd disks with your work? Maybe a video message from you? It may be out of the budget, but maybe its something to think about. i will think more about that one.

promisetangeman - DAVID!! sorry I didn’t answer your question. I found a link online for the process that i use. I find the process time consuming. Its kind of a trial and error process until you figure out how it works for YOU! and how you like to do it. I also found that large images are harder. Although i still do larger works.. it makes me happier doing works that are under 24x36in. Anything over that tends to be a pain. haha. here is that link:
http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/lessons/high/Pam-Mixed.htm
hope it helps

Caroline - Promise! First off, i just started reading your blog and it has already given me so many ideas! Second, i am a young girl that has huge dreams of becoming a designer. Do you have any tips to getting started with sketches and such (and/or encouraging words)? I want to be able to stand out and be different from all the other aspiring designers. Third, you had a beautiful wedding!

~abi~ - hey promise! :) you are so awesome! <just wanted to throw that out there!
anyway, i started out shooting film a loooong time ago, and while i LOVE digital now, i still struggle with the look of b&w images sometimes. i love how you post-process your b&w to have a grayish look! mind sharing how you get that tone? thanks! :)

Lana - Promise – I just found your blog a few weeks ago and have already been telling people to check it for inspiration.

My question is burning on my mind and apparently on other girls’ too —– but you are apparently intent on keeping it a secret —–

how do you do your hair???!!!! haha

Thanks for posting so much brain fodder as much as visual beauty on your blog – I’m actually a piano major but I’ve found a lot of great inspiration in different formats, it’s great. Thanks for sharing :)

promisetangeman - CAROLINE!!! Yes.. I am so excited for you and your future in design. You have the right idea to start sketching!! A lot of deisgners these days do EVERYTHING with computer… what can make you a stand out as a really dynamic designer is to learn to bring in the outside world into the computer land. Try and make everything you can and scan it in or re-do an already existing fonts or images. For an example… instead of finding a distressed font online.. you can distress it yourself.. using a photocopier, crinkled paper, or whatever else you can think of.

promisetangeman - ABBI!! Thanks for the kind words. Sometimes for my blk and white photos i use a totally rad action to get that dark gray effect.

LANA!! hahaha. you are right i have been avoiding that question.. because i dont know how to answer it. haha. i feel weird talking about my hair on my blog i think. hahaha. i know thats stupid. hha.

THE ANSWER TO THE HAIR QUESTION!! I naturally have ALOT of hair… and not only do i have alot of hair, each strand is really thick. It feels like sraw… seriously. haha O well.

I use a spray called Rootboost by catwalk and when i do my hair I back comb the roots. i only wash my hair ever 3 or 4 days.. so i do it once and let it GOOOOO!! PLUS i give BIG CREDIT to my hair dresser Kim Cornwell. She ROCKS!!

Nicole Monique Photography - Promise!!! Thanks girlie! I will have to get some Rootboost! Unfortunately for us girls who have fine hair, I guess we will have to just live vicariously through you! Thanks for sharing!

Caroline - thanks so much.

oh and what program would you suggest to put my designs on a computer?

promisetangeman - CAROLINE!! You can use a scanner to scan your designs into the computer. Then use photoshop or illustrator and play around with the images.

kimberly - promise… I’ve been a lurker here for a while and am so inspired by you guys. My question is really stupid, but it seems that everyone you shoot is drop-dead gorgeous. I’ve also noticed this with people like Daley Hake as well… Do you only shoot people who look THAT good, or is it smoke and mirrors? If so, how do you do it? thanks…

promisetangeman - Kimberly… I like your question. Interesting. My answer is two-fold

1. One thing that i really focus on as a photographer is getting to know my subject, studying their personality and facial expressions. i feel that part of the art in portrait photography is cathing the person at their BEST light/angle. The angle that showcases their charm. There are a lot of photographers that completely miss this.

2. To be honest I take photographs of the people who contact me to do a shoot. So i dont really control who i am taking photos of. Everyone now and then i will approach someone that i would like to do a photoshoot for, but for the most time i just take what i get. Maybe some people are to shy, or unconfident?

promisetangeman - P.S Kimberly…. thanks for saying Hi on the blog. glad you can be a part of this.

n - ilovelove everything you put on this blog! it’s amazing! i’ve just been getting into photography/design…what would you say are some of the most important things in that??? oh also….where do you come up with ideas/inspiration for the stuff you do???
p.s…i would LOVE to have you do my senior pictures in a few years. haha.

n - oh! i spelled my blog wrong! ahha. the link doesn’t work on that last comment. sorry bout that.

kellyhicks - Tim – what if you did a little flip book giveaway? similar to this:

http://sideshowpress.blogspot.com/2009/06/print-magazine-regional-design-annual.html

thought it might be fun.

Tim Allen - Ok, Kelly… THAT’S a cool idea! I’ll have to look into that.

promisetangeman - N!! Sorry it has taken me so long to answer your question. If you are interested in Photography and design…..Then DIVE IN…. start creating. Dont worry about failing! Just be inspired and dont let anything hold you back. You dont need to do it perfect the first time.. just get experience under your belt.

also i get inspired by magazine, the internet, blogs, people, art, clothing, adds, pretty much anything. When i need ideas i hunt on the internet for pretty images. :) hope this helps. I cant wait to see what you will create

pri - hi promise…first i wanted to say that i love your work, your style, your hair (of course ahahaha), and especially your graphic design… you are very inspiring to many many people! that is great! i am sorry i am so late with my question… i don’t even know if this forum is still going… but if you have a chance, i’d love to know if you have always imagined yourself where you are as a photographer/artist? or are you interested on trying other areas, such as advertisement, commercial, editorial?

thank you!

Kristen - hey there!

I saw your flickr through one of my friends, and i just wanted to say you are very talented! I am so inspired by all of your work. I’ve been doing photography for about 4 years now and i just wanna ask, where are your favorite places to take photos of people at? I always try to find unique backgrounds but Az kinda sucks ;)

promisetangeman - PRL- so sorry for the delay in answering. Thank you so much for your sweet words. I am not sure i understand your question completely… did you mean working for myself as my own business as opposed to working for a company? Through photography and design i have been able to do advertisment and projects that have been used for commercial work. I take projects on a freelance basis and always LOVE working with different companies.

Kristen- haha. great question.. i dont really have a great answer for you.. i usually just spot locations when i am out and about driving around. even the smallest little corners have a lot of potential for shoots. sometimes the locations are hard to spot. They definitely dont hit you in the face here in the AZ.

hope these answers help.

Haley Cole - Promise, you are really amazing. I just found your website like two days a ago, and you are really creative girl. I am sixteen, I’m thinking about go to EVIT, next semester, but they actually might not have there photo program anymore which is a bummer, so I was wondering, how did you start your photo career? Or do you sugesst any specific classes or schools?

Thank You,
Haley

Megan - Promise-
I love love love your “mixed media” or whatever its called when you combine all of your different photos and art! (like the one for africa)
Im sure it is a complicated process, but it would be super neat if sometime you could maybe do a mini basic tutorial or something. :)
I am going to china next year to volunteer at an orphanage. My friend and I are into photography, and we thought it would be really neat to take a bunch of photos and use them in things like calendars, notecards, etc and sell them; giving all of the money back to the Christian orphanage. Then I stumbled across your blog and saw that art you did for your (amazing) trip to Africa and thought that would be ust *perfect* for China!
Thanks for your awesome blog…it has inspired me as a person and photographer!
-megan

Awkward - First, I love your work! You inspired me to try and design my own invitations for my November wedding. I love taking pictures and have been looking into Photoshop to improve my pictures :) . I found this free super cool website http://www.picnik.com to edit pictures that suits me since I’m just beginning.

Here’s a weird question. I’d love to have engagement photos for my upcoming wedding, but I’m very self-conscious about my acne. It seems cameras pick up all the worst parts of me. Any tips??

seo - I like what you guys are up too. This type of clever work and reporting! Keep up the good works guys I’ve incorporated you guys to blogroll.

BABY OWL IN OUR TREE & A FUNNY VIDEO

ourowl5blog

LOOK AT OUR PRETTY BABY!!!!! Isnt she beautiful? This little creature completely made my day and my week. I have been checking the tree outside everyday to see if its back. Maybe someday it will come back. I am soo glad I got some goody photos of it. Its interesting that even the smallest of gifts can be sooo uplifing. i would have NEVER thought that a baby owl in our tree would have brought me soo much joy this week. hahah. I wanted to parade these photos around like it was my kid. I had to refrain from showing it off to our waitress the other night. hahaha.

and Below… are our nerdy new roomies

Jonathan - Get this. My wife can hear it. Even over the internet. I couldn’t.

We downloaded the app and discovered that she can only hear it if my phone is on mute! If I unmute my phone, she can’t hear it anymore.

Video evidence to come…

Katherine Bowman - No I can’t hear it! :) That’s funny! Great photos of the baby owl by the way, that would make my day as well! :)

Meredith - All of the guys at my church have that app. their in their 30′s and i’m the only one who can hear it. i hate it so when they’re trying to get me to run errands for them the play it and say they won’t stop until i run and grab their copies off of the printer or something. it’s the worst noise ever.

djsoundwav - dude! theres NOTHING there. can’t be possible! I couldnt hear it!!

Rachel Allen - So the reason you can’t hear it over the internet is because the camera can’t pick up that frequency. (At least that’s what Tim says) He put the app on his phone and both of us can hear it. It’s okay Lindsay…we’re freaks too.

Chris Metzger - Promise! I would be flipping out if I saw an owl in my tree.

You should have seen my when I saw fireflies for this first time last summer in Pennsylvania.
I was like a little child

YEARBOOK!! HIGHLIGHTS OF 2009 | PROMISE TANGEMAN ART & DESIGN - [...] 4. OUR SPECIAL FRIEND IN OUT TREE: I know this is silly… but we only had this owl friend in our tree for one day. I am soo thankful that there were some really loud birds outside sqauking to get our attention… or else we would have not even seen him. Seeing this friend actually made my month and I think about him from time to time. He had such a sweet face and would watch us wherever we would move. He is a barn owl and i consider this a treat to have had him for a day. if you would like to see the blog post go HERE. [...]

Sarah - So I know this is really old but Nick just played iphone app and we both totally jumped. The noise seriously hurt my neck it was so terrible! They should use it as torture to get info from terrorists.

And. . .Baby owl, I died. So cute!

AN INTERESTING LOGO & BRANDING PROCESS

01logo21
watermark4blog

Jeremy Greene and I have been talking for sometime now. The conversation to rebrand his company SPEKTICAL started back before the wedding.. before the wedding craze. haha. I was really excited to get the chance to work with him and his Rad self. Jeremy has a photography and video post production business. he takes some pretty awesome photographs. I decided to share this logo making process.. because it was an interesting one. Starting from the spelling of his business name, the unique letter shapes, the meaning behind the name, the nature of his business, and unexpected element of the final product accidently looking like another well known logo. Everytime i post something like this i hesitate. How much info do you share with people? Is this interesting enough to share? Is this letting the internet people too close? I dont know. I find that honesty and business are interesting. Even if it’s risky or not, I would love to share this process with you. I hope you can appreciate it for what it is. Logo making is an art, an art that can be refined, and never finished. OH the work of an artist. haha. YEEAAA… ahha. So I want to start with giving you a little background of Jeremy and his Biz.

Jamie Delaine - You are SO good at what you do! I wish I had a talent for graphic designing, I’d love to take a class someday.

Casia Fletcher - Love it all!!! So helpful to show the process…I would love to see this on a regular basis. Keep up the fab artwork.

Kate Farrar - Great post…thanks so much for sharing with us! I love seeing more of your design stuff on your blog!

amaris - super interesting! thanks for sharing these details, promise!

Melodie - Ya that designers Nathan’s advice was excellent!! The process was interesting to see and I enjoyed the trip through your brain lol. Thanks!

Katie - Thank you so much for sharing! You’re creativity is such an inspiration– not even for business, but for life in general. I’m sure you hear it all the time, but your work truly is fantastic.

kellyhicks - Where do you get your typefaces Promise? I’m always trying to find new ones. Cool logo, awesome job!

promisetangeman - Kelly,
I customized this typeface starting with a basic one. I get some ideas from dafont.com. They have some pretty bad ones on there… but some are okay. Especially if you tweek them alot.

kellyhicks - Cool thanks, I thought you probably customized it :)

Annie - I have never left a reply on your blog (so, sorry) but I wanted to let you know just how much I LOVE your posts on your thought and development process. It’s very interesting and lets others know that the finished product just doesn’t pop in your mind. It also lets future clients know that it takes time and a creative eye. Thanks so much for all of your tips! I *love* them!

Kate Noelle - Thanks for sharing this process with us! I know how hard it is to discern what’s okay to share and what’s not because you don’t want to give your magic away, but personally, it made me want to use you to design for me even more than before. ;) Just thought you should know! Great job on the logo…

Drew Tufano - Great post Promise! Really enjoyed seeing your process. Brilliant as usual! :D

WHAT DOES IT REALLY MEAN TO “SERVE” SOMEONE?

hurumakenyablog

The idea of “serving someone” seems so foreign in America. The closest thing that comes to mind is a server at a restaurant. Ha ha. And that is really sad. How often do you serve someone whole heartedly without expecting ANYTHING in return?  Even servers get tips. I would assume that most of the time we expect the favor to be returned no matter who it is. And sometimes we even get a little ticked off, if it’s not fair and we worked harder than the other person. I know I dont have much to offer the world, I don’t rescue or heal the dying or the dead, i can’t cure cancer, I can’t feed all that go hungry, and I cant even take away all the pain in the world.

But I can bring joy, love, and inspiration to life. I am very excited to serve with whatever I have. I am excited to serve humbly, selflessly, to put others before myself, and to care about people in the way that God does. I wanted to take a minute and tell you about an AMAZING opportunity that my hubby and I will get to do this coming August. We get to be the serving hands and feet of God at an orphanage in Africa. I am so excited to see, touch, play, teach art and photography to the orphans of Huruma Children’s Home in Kenya. What a cool opportunity to use my God given gifts to touch other peoples lives.

I look forward for your coming in august. This time my heart is healed and l will really sing and l am telling everyone you are coming. I love you and l care. Mama zipporah

Jen W. - Promise, I wrote this on Brian’s blog as well, and I’m going to write it here as well. If I had anything I could give you I would, however, that being said, I have nothing except my prayers. I will be praying for you and Brian in your fundraising, and your service in Kenya. I know you two will shine with God’s love while you are there and you are blessed with such amazing talents to go. You and Brian will be in my prayers through your adventure and service. Keep doing what you guys do! :)

lindsay guard - I have loved getting to live with you guys the past week and hear from your hearts about serving, Africa, the Church, and Kingdom work! Its awesome to see people who have figured out their wiring and are giving back in ways that no one else can. Its really opening my eyes to what it means to be a BODY and for each part to be doing what it was created to do. Please let Ryan and I know specific ways we can be helping you and Bri in these next weeks as you prepare for your trip. We’d love to help while we’re around :)

promisetangeman - AWWWW!! thanks lindsay. That is really really sweet of you. It really means alot. we will let you know for sure. I am excited for your new house… but i hope we get you guys for a little longer. haha

Patti - How random, Brent will be in Kenya the first two weeks of August serving! We’ll have to see how close you guys will be. Maybe his college students can team up with you guys on a project while you’re there! :)

Annie - I would totally love to go. Photography, missions, and orphans are what my heart is made up of.

Callie Alexander - Hey Promise! What is your workflow for your piece at the top of this post? It paints such a beautiful picture of children, Africa, and providing hope and laughter to such precious orphans.

Our wedding was the most amazing day of our lives. We NEVER thought it would have been as glorious as it was. It was truly a dream wedding without the price tag. Our friends and family came around us with so much love and support. It was amazing. We have the greatest friends and family. This was the best wedding ever. haha. Brian and i seriously cried the whole morning after because we were so thankful and unworthy of love like this. I hope you enjoy this little snapshot of our special day. We would love comments from everyone on this post… and especially from those that were there.

Daley’s got skills.
I love how you told the story on here, especially some of the unseen effects of the day (communion and marriages and all that).
You’re definitely the coolest people we know. Don’t tell the others we said that ;)

samantha felgemaker - daley’s got quite the eye.

amylynne - you’re one of the most creative people I’ve ever seen, everything I’ve seen that you’ve done is absolutely gorgeous and unique. I LOVE the hairpiece you made… I think it’s stunning.

Nicole Monique Photography - Promise, you are a total rockstar! I love how every single detail had so much thought put into it and how the whole day just screamed MADE BY PROMISE! LOVE! You are such a creative gifted individual and I am thoroughly impressed! Congrats on the first step of this amazing journey!

Meredith Amadee - that’s beautiful promise :) thank you for sharing and congratulations :)

amy - Promise, I feel like you captured your wedding perfectly in this post! I was very emotional at it, especially with the chuppah and watching ALL the people taking communion and worshipping together. Another favorite part of the ceremony (that made me all emotional) was looking over at the two of you during worship and seeing you raise your hands together, singing… what a way to start your marriage, worshipping our loving God together! It touched my heart. Love you lady

Jill Lindquist - Okay… still my favorite part was you wiping Bri’s tears away during the ceremony:) Makes me watery eyed to think about:) Love you guys so much!

Laura Patty - I don’t know you, but Brian is my boyfriend Matt Westbrook’s cousin, and ever since I saw Brian’s blog post on your proposal, I have been keeping up with any news on your wedding. You seem like an incredible couple and WOW! what an amazing wedding! I wish you all the best in your bright, bright future…Congrats!

David Womack - Totally Amazing!! Congrats! SO Creative.

miss james - WOW LOVE!!! seriously the most beautiful wedding i’ve ever laid eyes on!
you are a doll. i want to be your neighbor and double date with you guys.
XOXO.

promisetangeman - Hey miss James. haha you are soo sweet. double dates? of course. we wish.

paige - Adore everything about your wedding!!!!! Would LOVE to know the designer who did the dress! Congratulations!!! Amazing.

April Chandler - Wow. I literally was holding back tears while imagining your wedding ceremony – all those individuals and marriages taking things under God’s “umbrella”. That is SO beautiful! My brother in law and his fiance used a Chuppah for their wedding ceremony two weeks ago. I love the symbolism!
Also, I CAN’T BELIEVE you walked down the aisle to the instrumental version of Coldplay’s Fix You because I did the EXACT SAME THING! The doors opened at the exact same moment for me! It’s definitely powerful – I love the music to that song! I told my husband you were my kindred spirit. :) Only, you definitely have way more creative talent than I do! Thanks so much for sharing your wedding day! I loved reading about it.

April

Melissa Womack - That must of been the Rock’nest day ever!!! Those pictures & slide show are amazing. I loved your walk down the isle music. Where people cheering you on?! I bet they felt like they were in a movie. I am so happy for you. What a wonderful day. I loved all your creative flare all over. God Bless you marriage and God Bless the talents he gave you.

Callie Alexander - Hey Promise! I follow your blog (from all the way in SC) and I absolutely LOVE how you did your hair & your centerpieces!! And from your pictures, it looks like you had the most magical day of your life!

Amanda - Your ceremony stirred something in my soul.
I was inspired. I felt love. I felt loved. I felt.
I wrote a whole blog about your wedding…

bethfitch - When I read the book Sex God I was deeply touched by the images of the chuppa evoked by Bell’s powerful words, but now I don’t need to use my imagination as you two are the living canvas of what the chuppa represents. And for God to show up in such a powerful way at your wedding….well it gives me chills and great hope for marriage, for a generation rising up, for the Kingdom.

Rebekah - Oh My GOODNESS! I have never seen a more amazing wedding! I love everything about it. Absolutly Amazing!

Kelsey - i’m currently planning my wedding, and i am going for a vintage/rustic look. i absolutely adore your wedding photos and it makes me so excited for my own wedding! congrats and i hope you and your husband have a great life together.

Matilda - Your wedding was gorgeous! Just beautiful and memorable. Unique decorations and it looks you all had a blast.

Sarah-Jane - Wow Promise! I’ve been following your blog for awhile now. This wedding looks totally amazing. You both are truly blessed to have the love and support you had on this special day of yours. TOTALLY A.M.A.Z.I.N.G!!
Grace, Peace and best Wishes for your future.

Lisa Call - Hi! I’ve never met you but my future mother-in-law is Susan Booker (of EVFree HB), I’m not sure if you know her personally or just through Marina. Anyway, you are such an inspiration to me! Not only are you creative and talented in ways I could only dream of but you managed to have a unique, beautifully, individually designed wedding that showcased your talent and style and gave ALL THE GLORY TO GOD!!! I am planning my wedding and I NEVER want to lose perspective in all the details and plans of who designed the gift of marriage and who will be the One carrying us through it! I am planning on taking communion with my fiance during my ceremony and now I’d love to invite all witnessing to participate. The picture of you in your dress with your hands lifted to the Lord in worship brought me to tears! Congratulations and praise God for the blessings He’s given you!

Lisa Call - ps Where did you get all the branches and what not? Are those living, planted trees around the chuppah or branches placed in a pot? I am in over my head trying to find reasonably priced manzanita and curly willow! I want a very “enchanted forest” feel with branches and ribbons and lights and I thought it would be more economical than decorating with fresh flowers. Any thoughts for me?

Kelsey Smith - Promise. Wow. First, I lover EVERYTHING about your wedding. Your dress is perfect, my dream dress, your wedding, my dream wedding. I wish we could have seen it in person, it is so amazingly YOU. So unique, natural and filled with personal touches. If you come back to WA PLEASE let us know. We miss you!!! P.S. If/when Josh and I get married, I want you to fly up to do our photography FYI ;)

Suz - Hi

I have just stumbled across your website via a link on Elsies and am blown away. Your have become a major influence with some of your ideas.

Your wedding looks spectacular and I must admit there are a few ideas I may be borrowing for my own when the time comes around.

You managed to put your own style on it and make it so true to your personalities rather than going down the road of same old wedding. Love it.

Hope you have a lovely day

LETS TALK BUSINESS

Oops. I think this is my first big post ever without an image. YIKES!! haha. Okay. I don’t talk to much about business stuff, because, well…. i don’t see myself as a very good business person. But I guess that leads me to ask the question, what does it mean to be a “business person?”

Lindsey commented on one of my blog posts and asked this question:
Promise, I just finished my design program and I’m starting to get my biz cards and stuff together. I noticed you don’t have your phone number on yours….I’ve been debating if i should do that or not on mine. I don’t want to give out too much information. I was wondering your thoughts on this….

I thought this was a really interesting question because my answer brings up a whole other topic. My answer to that question is two fold. ONE, I don’t have my phone number on my business cards because my husband won’t let me….easy enough. Hahaha. He says there are way to many creeps out there.
And two, because i hate the phone. I barely ever answer it, and i am not by it every minute. Another business person told me that I should have it on there because even though I don’t like the phone doesn’t mean that other people feel the same way. One of my clients might ONLY like to talk on the phone, so therefore, I need to be able to accommodate them as my client. hmmm… This is where it brings up an interesting conversation.

Jasmine* - Word to your mom. I don’t have my phone number on my business cards either…heck, not even on my website! There are two schools of thought on this topic, but you and I are on the same side.
I wonder if that means we’re VERY smart…or…ummm…not so smart! ;)

Jill Lindquist - This is why I love you SO MUCH!! Wise, oh, wise beyond your years:) Do you know how many people have never figured this out? Let you do, be what YOU LOVE!! And, do it with all your heart, the way that God gifted and intended you to do it!!
Thought about you while in Seattle… Stayed right downtown & did a lot of urban hiking. Super cool design stuff going on:):)
Yes, Bri is right… You can’t put your # on your cards….

promisetangeman - HAHAHAHAAHA uh oh

Jill Lindquist - You can write it on a cute piece of paper, once the person has been throughly screened by Brian or someone who is at least 25!!! HaHa:):)

Jill Lindquist - someone who can spell “thoroughly”…

Dan - Hey promise,
I Was wondering how you go about putting together professional/creative presentation :)

promisetangeman - hahahh. HI DAN. i like the smiley face. What kind of presentation are you talking about? like the one i did for the debney comps here?: http://promisetangemanblog.com/design/john-debney-presentation

Dan - Yeah! That kind :p

Dan - I really dig the JD stuff p.s

Jackie - Hey Promise,

About business…I work full time as a production and would LOVE love to get my freelance stuff off the ground. I also work for a big church and do all their youth stuff on the side (for free). What advice could you give me and other youngins looking to get their start. I seem to be too tired at the end of the day to focus on myself and get my website and all that stuff done. Thank you so much for always giving us great nuggets of info on here, I love your blog!

Jackie - *production artist I meant to say not just “a production” haha

promisetangeman - Hey jackie,
So you are too tired at the end of the day… but you want to get your freelance stuff off the groud as well?? When i worked full time at the church doing design, I just started documenting the designs that I did for the church. I put them on flickr and my blog. I started a super easy website that i just plugged in my images. The internet people saw that i was doing work and would send freelance requests.

But and I did very little freelance work because I was in the same boat as you. I was to tired at the end of the day. But at least i was documenting the work that i was doing. Then i just slowly started accepting freelance jobs. I didnt advertise because i still wanted to have a life. Dont work to hard at trying to get freelance jobs especially if you are already working to hard. Just let your work online speak for itself. Hope this helps

beth - Great post! :) YESSSSS…I am just starting to build a foundation for my own business and this is fab advice…”If you stay focused on what you love to do, then you can refine your skill, get a lot of practice, and get really good at what you love to do.” Oh…and your husband’s advice…so funny…so true…and sounds so much like my own husband! Keep up the great work and thanks for inspiring!

Chris Schroeder - Jackie, to add to that thought… I went from full time to part time b/c I wanted to try freelancing, but the transition took a long time for me. I actually started my own biz in 2004 and just now has it started to blossom where I could go part time. I’m not saying that to discourage you. Just be aware that it takes some patience and honest goal planning & personal assessment. Just take it one step at a time and don’t get frazzled if you see other artists achieving their goals before you do.

Promise, I’m one for putting my number on things b/c I have a lot of clients that prefer talking on the phone verses email, but maybe that’s just me. I do find however that a phone conversation is good b/c you can hear the tone of the person’s voice, which is a good if you’re not sure about the person. It’s also more personal.

Jackie - Thank you guys both! Great advice!

Lindsey Strobel - Promise…thank you for answering my question, that’s actually what i wanted to hear but don’t. Anyway, I’m so glad you opened up about your business in general. I feel like i’ve been fighting with my professors about just wanting to do what i love vs. everything. But what if i have my own style and certain things that i love to do…..why can’t i do that?, is what i always tell them.
Hearing that it’s ok from another successful designer makes me feel better about getting my own career started and focusing on what i love to do!!

Thanks for sharing!

Ashley - good stuff Promise. I love your thoughts that you had for Jackie on documenting stuff that you are already doing. I design for a church also, and find it hard sometimes to take time to focus on other projects without going crazy. :)

Veronica! - This was a really encouraging post. I’m glad I read it.. and you wrote it :)
I completely agree with you. I myself have been trying hard to get my business off the ground. My website is almost done and I’m attempting to begin ‘defining’ myself as a particular kind of artist. Your words put this effort of mine into a different perspective though because I think I am trying to focus on doing as much as I can to accommodate more people.. but it is super important for me to also remember what I love and what I’m good at naturally and then offer that. I guess because my style is not quite strong yet, I have to learn how to advertise myself as unique. It will be a challenge. But I must say, it was refreshing to read this and I think it will help me start thinking differently about the future. So, thank you :)

mike passaro - “As a business owner and creator ONLY DO WHAT YOU LOVE TO DO. Then you won’t hate your life.”

Love this…If you’re going to do all the hard work of starting business that is built around the things you love, it just don’t make sense to be miserable.

Megan Menke - Ok, so I know this post is rather old…but I couldn’t help but say thank you!! Over the past week or so I have been setting up a plan for re-branding my business this year and a common factor that my family and friends are ALWAYS telling me is: answer your phone! It’s not that I purposely don’t answer it, I just don’t always have it with me…this post rocked my world! I can have a business card without my phone number on it?! BRING IT ON!!! :)
