02 INSIDE THE CREATIVE TOOLBOX

As some of you know I just started a mini series showcasing different artists and the tools in their creative toolbox. I started it off a couple of weeks ago sharing my MUST HAVES for doing what I do. And I am pretty excited to have Shauna Haider from NubbyTwiglet.com here today to share HER must haves as well. Shauna has a really unique style, a killer design sense, and she has created a very cohesive knock out personal brand! 1 // AERON CHAIR
When I was first starting out, I had a cheap IKEA chair but after a few hours of sitting, my back would be killing me. I noticed that when I freelanced at agencies and sat in their Aeron chairs, my back still felt great at the end of the day. Search Ebay and Craigslist if you’re in the market for one — I found mine brand new on Ebay for WAY less than retail.

This is such a game changer for music lovers! I love that I can listen to new albums in their entirety immediately and also check out other people’s playlists. It solves the dreaded “I don’t know what to listen to” issue!

THE VALUE THAT VIDEO BRINGS TO A BRAND’S EXPERIENCE

It’s a hot thing right now to have a formal “promo” video for your business/brand. I believe that a video done right can be very powerful and draw the viewer into a full experience and better understanding of your brand. It makes the online world seem offline in a way. It’s the same reason that people love Skype…. because you feel like you are there with the person.

I am really loving this new promo video for my sister and brother-in-law (Troy Grover Photographers). I think this video is fantastic all around and you really get a glimpse into their life and business as a photography duo. You really get to see what Troy and Aimee are like to work with, you see them interact with each other, and at the end you feel very confident that they have the experience, the passion, and the abilities to deliver what they promise. The video is professional but still *very* personal. And I especially love that we get to hear both of them speak. It’s amazing how much better you feel like you know them after you hear them talk, move, etc. Big props to 618 studios and Aimee and Troy Grover for this killer vid!!

On the other hand I have seen promo videos that completely miss the mark because the creators have not thought through the goals or the message they want to communicate through the video. The focus becomes on making the video “cool” and “different” and in the end it doesn’t communicate or help sell the product or service it’s attempting to promote. The video actually hurts the brand by turning people off because it’s off-topic, irrelevant, confusing, tacky, unprofessional, cheesy, poorly written, or the person is REALLY bad on camera. Have you seen those? haha. I am sure you have.

I don’t consider myself a video guru by any means *but in my personal opinion* a promo video should 1 // Communicate the heart of what and why they do what they do, 2 // Showcase the company’s culture/lifestyle, and 3 // Show a glimpse of what it’s like to work with that company as a client or customer.

What do you think are key components to creating a successful promo video? Seen any great ones lately that really sell you on an idea, service, or product? I would love to see them here in the comments.

Aimee - It’s difficult to do a video with an interview component and not come off as cheesy. Aimee and Troy did very well! Being comfortable in-front of the camera is key. Plus, I just love how she spells her name ;)

Abe - Totally agree. I have been saying for some time that the use of video would become an increasingly powerful branding tool. That being said, it should reflect the brand and it should give you something that other mediums cannot. I do think the use of it varies by content (product, service, event etc) and context (where and how it will be used). Regardless it should be quick, engaging, informative and entertaining. Just my .02 :)

shaina longstreet - I really appreciated how they talked about each other instead of talking about themselves in the interview section. That’s powerful…to hear someone else talk about the strengths and personality you offer instead of of it feeling kinda “braggy.” Great video!! Thanks for sharing.

I love it. But for photographers who aren’t ready to make the the big investment it usually takes to acquire one of these snazzy promos – make your own. You have the tools and the creativity. I honestly think some of the best photog promos are made by the photographers themselves.

Leslie - Such a great post! I [hired a professional] and still wasn’t happy with my video. He didn’t understand the goals – and had to come and reshoot things he had missed … needless to say it’s not on my site … and needless to say my husband isn’t happy with that [since we paid for it]! ha ha …

SUMMER TIME NEON KICK

Sorry for the conflicting yellows here one the blog… But, I gotta say… I am on this summer time neon kick!! And my nails have it BAD!! haha. I am wearing neon orange at the moment but I am thinking that I need to try this bright yellow highlighter color next.

WEBSITE DESIGN PROCESS FOR MELISSA JILL’S ALBUM TEMPLATES

I am really excited to share with you today a new logo + website project! Melissa Jill, a wedding and portrait photographer, contacted me to design the new visual identity for her company called “ALBUM DESIGN TEMPLATES”. Her album template designs are very clean and modern and her personal style aesthetic has a home-y slightly retro feel. I was stoked to be a part of this project.

As you know I’ve been on a video kick… So instead of just writing a blog post about the project I decided to film a short video to let you in on the process for creating the brand and site. I am kinda stoked because I filmed and edited the video myself. AH! There’s TONS to learn, but you gotta start somewhere.

The project consisted of a logo, visual identity, and the website design. The design process was an interesting one. Melissa desired something different and funky with the layout of the website, which is usually based off of a strong, yet unusual grid. But the album design templates had different grids of their own… which brought a challenging dynamic. We worked through it and Melissa feel in love with one of my Sitehouse website designs so we completely customized it to fit the needs of her brand.

To me they seem like a hurdle to people unless you have some really specific you want to show each visitor. If someone is already trying to get to your site, why make them “Click to Enter” again?

Amy - Promise, you seriously are rocking it out so hard core! And now with this video stuff, shoot woman, I’m lovin all the hats you wear! One suggestion when putting music to a video, the background music competed with the audio a tad. You want vocal audio to bounce on the audio scanner at about -12db (in most video editing software it will be a yellow region,) so if you add background music, just make sure it’s far enough under that so it doesn’t take away from the talking. Also, you can always play with bringing the music volume up when no one is talking. Anyway, you’re awesome! And I am by no means an expert, but just thought I’d share a bit of what I do know! Keep the videos coming!

01 INSIDE THE CREATIVE TOOLBOX

Part of growing as an artist is gaining experience and learning from others. I have always been intrigued by the creative process. Everyone has a different way of organizing their business and getting their creative juices flowing. With that said, I have been thinking about other creative’s and what tools it takes to do what they do. One of my ideas was to feature different artists and display what’s in their “Creative Toolbox” here on the blog.

I thought I would start us off by sharing a few items from my personal creative toolbox….ya know…. things, products, apps, inspiration, programs, companies, and supplies that help me do what I do best. Sound interesting? I hope so. I couldn’t include all of them, obviously… but I thought I would share a few.

1 // FANCY MOUSE PAD
It’s the little things that sometimes make a difference. I love my computer set up even down to the little touch of my RAD mouse PAD. It keeps the office clean, dynamic, and inspiring.

2 // LOCAL NATIVE SOUNDTRACK
Keep changing the music up. For me, music creates energy and excitement. I get MOVED by music. A great staple for me has been Local Natives station on Pandora.

3 // CMYK MAGAZINE
In a digital world I feel refreshed when I open and flip through print. CMYK Magazine is a favorite of mine.

1. Post-its for my to do lists/brainstorming — I love color coding

2. Pilot’s Hi-Tec-C pens in 0.5 point to write with.

3. For editing photos, I usually use Lightroom more than PS. I only use PS when I really have to.

4. Sour Patch Kids’ Watermelon to give me that sugar boost when it’s needed.

5. Fashion magazine to keep my mind reeling with ideas. I’m more visual thinker, so it helps to have visuals.

One more would be my floor: because I’m a visual person, I like to lay everything out
and see how things are put into place.

TIPS FOR DESIGNING YOUR SITE

It took me almost TWO YEARS to finally hit “publish” for my new site. I know a lot of you are in the same boat – redesigning your site or brand on your own or with a designer. Either way.. You have to come to grip with ideas and make some decisions. Here are my tips that I learned through the process of designing for myself. These are things that I wish someone would have told me before I started. I know that everyone;s process is different, but maybe some of these can help you too.

1 // TREAT YOURSELF LIKE A CLIENT
Be professional with yourself by setting guidelines, processes, and deadlines rather than designing on a whim or when you feel like it. This will keep you on track, feeling professional about your process, and it will prevent your decisions from being swayed by your emotions or feelings at the moment.

2 // WRITE ALL THE CONTENT FIRST
Content is KING! Don’t forget that your website is there to display information, so the info is the most important part. Write that first then design your site around the content. I made this mistake a few times by designing a “really cool” site, and then realized my content was not working in it. #bigtimewaster

michelle - omigosh, Promise! EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. of those bullet points is something I am doing or have done!!! I have been trying to work on my new site for well over a year and just cannot commit! I think I get so far into it and then I get sick of that design or think of something I like better. It’s a vicious cycle!
I’m gong to put some of your advice into action and hopefully I’ll be hitting publish SOON!

arlene - Thanks Promise! I needed to read this today! and put my self in check. I have been wanting to do a new site and rebrand and it really is hard to commit and just do it! I just get to the point where I am way over thinking and I lose track and need a break! Reading your post gives me the inspiration I need to get it going!!!

David - Good tip on writing content first. Maybe as part of that create a sitemap so that there is some structure and plan for what needs to be written and designed.

Lauren - Oh wow! What a wonderful and inspiring list. I’m considering a redesign, and while some of these things I’m good at, weeeeellllll…others (like just hitting publish!), not so much! All of your points will be top of mind for me from here on out.

Liz - These are helpful tips and I like your grid. I’m on my way to designing my blog soon. Another tip I’d add is:

“Avoid putting annoying ‘moving’ pictures on your website (like you’ve got in your facebook box).”

I tend to close webpages that have things ‘flashing’ at me that way.
