Wow…what a week!! The picture above is ‘Pre-Surgery Promise’.
Seriously though on behalf of Promise and me…THANK YOU!! Thank you for the incredible outpouring of prayer, support and encouragement. Promise has read all of the comments and we’re both overwhelmed by the time each of you took to leave a comment and your commitment to pray for her. Beyond blessed!
We were facing some big unknowns in this journey with Promise’s Thyroid. Total removal of her Thyroid, Cancer and a bunch of other ramifications that would come with those things were all on the table. At many points it’s really been a pretty scary little stint for us. All we’ve had in the unknowns is our love for each other, an amazing community of people (like many of you), a lot of prayer and the hope and confidence in a God who loves us!
The surgery went well and by well I mean as well as it could go when they’re removing something from the inside of your body. Promise did so good & the staff at Desert Banner Medical Center were amazing.
Here’s the skinny…they did a Thyroidectomy on the left side of her Thyroid (removed it). They did a quick biopsy of that side of the Thyroid during surgery and it was BENIGN!! This was amazing news and they were able to sew her back up and send her to recovery, sparing the right side of her Thyroid. THIS WAS A HUGE ANSWER TO OUR SPECIFIC PRAYERS (#4 on the original hijack post)! We’ve since been waiting for more extensive lab results on the left side to ensure that it was all indeed benign. I’m so happy to tell you that our surgeon called us late today to let us know that it was completely BENIGN!!! THERE IS NO CANCER!! PRAISE GOD!!!
We ended up in the hospital overnight for observation which was a first for both of us. We’ve been working hard on trying to help Promise manage her pain. One thing is for sure, surgery may be painless but recovering from it isn’t necessarily. She’s been amazing though. We are now home recovering and she’s catching up on a few chick flicks she’s well over due on and just taking it easy.
Thank you for being such an overwhelming force of prayer on our behalf. We sincerely believe that God heard our prayers for Promise and answered. He gets the credit! One of the most comforting things we’ve held onto during these weeks of the unknown is our hope in Christ. I love what Hebrews 6:13 reminds us about the promise of hope that we have in Christ, ‘We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure…’! He definitely displayed this hope to us in answering our prayers for Promise.
My favorite story of our time in the hospital was Promise’s uncanny smile, post-surgery. She came out of recovery, not able to speak, yet, with the biggest smile on her face. Those beautiful cheeks, amazing eyes, her beautiful white teeth shimmering…stunning as always. I’ve never seen a girl look so bright after surgery. Who smiles after surgery?? Only Promise! So glad to call her my wife.
She’ll be laid up here for the next few days…so leave her some comment love and thanks for letting me hijack her blog. Hopefully she’ll be back to her inspirational-creative-self and blogging again here really soon! CHEERS!!!

I’ve been reading your blog for a long time now, and I just wanted to thank you for always being such a refreshing spirit. You were one of the biggest inspirations when it came to pursuing my love for photography and design – reading your blog and following your work pushed me to jump in wholeheartedly and try really, really hard at my passions – and I’m so glad I made that choice. Thank you inspiring us in everything that you do, you are in my prayers, Promise!

April 15th, 2011 at 4:54 am
Oh, my heart is rejoicing with you this morning as happy tears flow down my cheeks. I leave you with some words that have spoke volumes to my husband and I as of recent – I pray that they will be an encouragement to you too. Cheers!!
Read in light of the glorious gospel and God’s great grace, “This is the way to treat the hard and discouraging things in life. It is useless to fret over them, fretting will never remove them and it only weakens our energy and mars our life. But if we meet them with undismayed courage and persistent resolve, we shall conquer them. And in conquering them carve royalty of character and noble worth of ourselves.” — J.R. Miller

You do not know me but I follow your blog. I have loved seeing how God displays His artistic creativity through you. I am going through some unknown medical times myself and your faith is inspiring me. So thankful you are healthy and recovering. Your sister in Christ, Kerri
April 15th, 2011 at 9:51 am
Promise.. I am so glad to hear that you’re ok. We’ve been praying for you!
April 15th, 2011 at 9:52 am
Exactly why you should have gotten a second opinion (or a third) – it was not worth losing half your thyroid over benign lesions. Now you will have to be on medication for the rest of your life, all because you had a surgery-happy doctor. Now you will easily lose hair, have sleep issues, and gain weight. I wish you all the best, you’re a sweeteheart.
April 15th, 2011 at 9:54 am
You are in my prayers Promise. We have an amazing God!
April 15th, 2011 at 9:54 am
so glad to hear that everything turned out all right. I may not have commented before but I was very concerned for you guys dealing with all this. I may never have gotten a chance to meet you but I admire you and your work so much and would hate to have seen that light dimmed by such a terrible thing as Cancer. Take care and I look forward to stalking your amazing creativity once you are “up and at ‘em” again.
April 15th, 2011 at 9:55 am
Thanks for writing this Brian…Promise is so beautiful and strong and I have no doubts she will be back on her feet in no time…but until then, enjoy as many chick flicks as possible! We will continue to thank God for health and wholeness…nothing missing, nothing lacking!
April 15th, 2011 at 9:56 am
So happy for you guys! Know you’re relieved – still praying for a quick and easy recovery!

Promise & Brian,
I can’t tell you how happy I am for the two of you and your wonderful blessings. I know just from previous experience looking down a road of possible cancer is not fun. I know how Satan can take this time to draw you away from God using fear and worry. Praise God that He hears our hearts and blesses us. You and Promise are most definitely in my prayers. We are surrounded with an amazing church family that is never ceasing in support. Once again I’m so happy to hear the good news.
Smiles,
Dena Busboom

I don’t know you guys personally, but I wanted to let you know that we are family in the body of Christ, so I have been praying for both of you! I first heard about your through 31Bits (Alli has been working with me on some things for my non-profit here in the OC), but Promise, even without knowing you, you radiate a joy for life that is inspiring, encouraging, and contagious. To read this update was both tear-jerking (in a great way) and a wonderful praise report! Thank Gog He took care of you! He is the Great Physician! May your recover be quick and another testament of His care for you!
As a side note, I love how Brian loves you! My passion in life is helping marriages, that’s what my non-profit is all about, and it is so encouraging to hear a real life success story like yours! Love it!! Maybe someday you guys would be willing to share your story with me for an article/interview for my non-prof? Just a thought.
Get better soon! God bless you!

Praise the Lord!! That is great news. I hope that you are recovering well Promise!
April 18th, 2011 at 2:25 pm
Hi Promise,
Hoping you are resting and having a speedy recovery. As you already know I’ve had much experience in being a patient due to my heart problems, but since you knew me from way back, I was also diagnosed with thyroid problems. And I have had a thyroidectomy too. My advise to keep that scar disappearing is once it heals a bit, buy some vitamin E pills, pop them and rub on your incision. This will minimize the scarring and redness. Later you cause that cocoa butter lotion. Always remember sunscreen! Mine is hardly noticeable now! Tell Brian we appreciate the updates.
Hugs and prayers

Promise! I am late to the party, as per usual, so I am praying now for recovery and God’s will as you move forward. You are a light, both of you. It is a blessing to see you honor Him in the valley and on the mountaintops!

Haven’t “stopped by” in a while – stumbled here one day and it’s now bookmarked! Love Promise’s design work. Glad to hear that she has pushed through and things seem to be moving in a positive direction; although sorry for the health scare. Best wishes….and speedy recovery.
