I love getting back to my painting roots. I first fell in love with art (drawing and painting) before I ever started into Graphic Design. In fact, in College I double majored in Graphic Design and Fine Art. So painting has always been really close to my heart. And I love it when I get the time to create new work. I want to share with you a really easy technique that I think you will really love to try as well.
I absolutely love the simple yet dynamic effect of this art piece. It is sooo easy. It literally took me only a few minutes to complete from start to finish. I used images from magazines but i think it would be AWESOME if you were a photographer and used this technique to display hints of your photos in your office or studio. I think that would be a KILLER and unique way to showcase your work…. Without being to cheesy…. ya know? Or it would be a really artsy way to use your family photos as well. I don’t really have pictures of me and Brian around the house… So might consider doing something like this with our photos. Without blabbing on, below is the HOW-TO.

I was really honored to have been interview by Sarah from Siren Magazine. I love the magazine and the topics she is covering. Its pretty cool!! I thought it was going to the be the typical interview… but she asked some really interesting questions and i really enjoyed answering them. Some of them were: If you couldn’t be an artist, what would you do? Does your faith/belief system affect the way you run Promise Tangeman Creative? If you could swap wardrobes with one celebrity, who would it be? What is your guilty pleasure? And this one is really interesting: Some say the church is not creative enough, while others say the church is too focused on aesthetic (with fog machines, elaborate sets, etc.). How do you feel the church is doing creatively, and why is this important?

Hey Guys!! I have been wanting to share this process with you all for so very long. I was so excited when the girls with glasses contacted me with this idea. The video was so fun to shoot. and I really love those girls. This process is near and dear to my heart because I have repeated trial and error until I got a process that works well for me. It even includes a silly tooth brush, pan of water, and some patience.

(I know this photo isn’t when I was 10 years old, but I love how it displays me doing what i love to do….. when i didnt know i was going to do it. hhaa)
When you are a kid your dreams, hopes, and desires are so simple, yet so surprisingly true to who you really are. One of our great friends Stan Endicott has moments where he spews out wisdom and I wait to catch those moments. One day he went on a rant telling me that whatever you were doing when you were 10 years old is what you are made to do. Haha that seems so silly to me, but when you are 10 years old life is simple, your thoughts and heart is simple, and in your free time you are doing what you love to do. And your adult fears didn’t hold you back
When i think back to when i was 10 years old I looooved making things. My sister and I filled our days with making mud cupcakes, building forts in the backyard, playing dress up, recreating Disneyland rides in our backyard, choreographing roller-blade routines in the driveway, arranging American Girl doll displays in our front home window, teaching our pet rats tricks, writing books, illustrating books, lemonade stands, car washing businesses, and cooking the nastiest food we could come up with and making our dad eat it. Haha!
My sister and i also had a lot of small businesses like a car washing business, a lemonade stand, manicure business, necklace making business, and a few other ones. haha.
What were you doing when you were 10 years old? What were the desires of your young heart? and what are you doing now?

Because I love you all…[PLEASE READ THE DISCLAIMER AT THE BOTTOM]
I have learned a ton about how to better run my own business in this past year. One being in the realm of copying. Copying is such a gray area and especially in the art arena. It’s a constant check and re-check and re-adjust especially when it comes to networking, collaborating with friends, keeping good relationships, and being inspired.
This is a really sensitive topic for young small business owners… and any business owner for that matter. Apple keeps their new releases a top secret, others have official non competitor agreements, etc. But lately, in my small community of artistic friends i have seen some real broken hearts over this issue. And i have even seen online personalities publicly call attention to others personal copycat failures. And i too almost got sucked into a bitter thought process. But that is not how I want to live my life or run my business. But, that is what inspired this blog post.
I have to be honest and say that I have definitely had my moments as an artist where I was a little too inspired by a particular idea, photo, or design. And I have also had those moments where I got this great idea… And realized it DID seem a little too familiar once I rendered it out… “Oh YA… that’s where I saw that…dang it!!” And then there has been many circumstances where I have seen my ideas/designs copied and I thought to myself “wow, that just doesn’t look very good”, or “hmm… there is something missing to that”.
Now, I totally understand that sometimes copying can be a good thing and help in the learning process. As an art student I had plenty of assignments where I would have to copy a famous painting technique, color scheme, or exact drawing. And I DID learn a ton in that process. But in the professional competitive business world it cheapens your brand.

On the way home from Rome I finished reading this MIND BLOWING book called “Rework”, recommended from our friends over at Soul City Church. To be really honest, I am not a big reader. My mind usually gets really distracted and I start dreaming of creative ideas that get me carried away to another land. But this book really kept my attention and helped me view my business in a different way. It was cool to see that some of the things they mentioned in the book, I am already doing. And others I was enlightened beyond belief. I will definitely fill you in more on some of the amazing things they touch on in this book. But the last page had my name written all over it. It was titled:
—————————————————————————————————————————————————
INSPIRATION IS PERISHABLE
We all have ideas, ideas are immortal. They last forever. What doesn’t last forever is inspiration. Inspiration is like fresh fruit or milk: It has an expiration date. If you want to do something, you’ve got to do it now. You can’t put it on the shelf and wait two months to get around to it. You can’t just say you will do it later. Later you won’t be pumped up about it anymore.
