I just finished Jon and Maryke’s save the date design and I decided to show you what steps I took to get there. Just like with all clients, I asked her to send me images that she liked for the project. Maryke expressed to me that she wanted a similar feel as the example photo below, but with my flair added to it. She wanted simple and classic. Her colors are black, white, gray, and red. The first defining factor is that the photo she chose was vertical, not horizontal as the example shows. Therefore tweeks had to be made to make this work.
The first thing I did was turned the photo black and white (following her colors). I then scoured the internet looking for embellishments to add to the design. I did not just pick randomly. I decided lace would add a feminie texture and the grunge frame would add an earthy mishap touch. I changed the colors and tweeked the border a bit in photoshop.
I then did some type research to find exactly the right look for the card. I didn’t want something loopy and swirly because I know that would be too girly and froofroo for the couple. I was looking for strong, bold, straight typefaces. I chose two different fonts and combined them together to make the final “date” icon. After that, I played around with what typeface I should use for the wording at the bottom (keeping in mind what I stated above). You can see I tried some different styles and then landed with one I thought worked best. I arranged a few different looks with the elements that i created/found until I landed on a favorite.
How do you think this turned out? Did you enjoy knowing the process behind this? or is this boring?
